At Palliative Care ACT, community events are not an add-on to our work. They are a core part of how we support people, families, and carers across the ACT.
On the surface, a community event might look simple. You buy a ticket, attend something enjoyable, and know that your participation supports a good cause. But behind each event is a very deliberate purpose. These gatherings help fund essential services, strengthen community connection, and ensure that compassionate palliative care continues to be available when it is needed most.
The role fundraising plays in our work
Palliative Care ACT is a not-for-profit organisation. While some funding is provided through government and health systems, it does not fully cover the breadth of support we offer. Community fundraising helps make the difference between what is possible and what is needed.
Funds raised through our events directly support the work we do with people living with life-limiting illness, as well as their families and carers. This includes practical programs, education, volunteer support, and advocacy for better understanding and access to palliative care across our region.
When someone chooses to attend one of our events, they are not making an abstract contribution. They are helping ensure that care, dignity, and support are available to people at some of the most challenging moments of their lives.
Why community connection matters just as much
Fundraising alone is not enough to sustain a charity over time. Connection matters just as much.
Community events give people the opportunity to engage with Palliative Care ACT in a way that feels approachable and human. Many people have not had direct contact with palliative care services, or they may only have a limited understanding of what palliative care involves. Events create a gentle entry point, allowing people to build familiarity and trust without pressure or expectation.
They also remind us that palliative care is not something that sits apart from everyday life. It exists within our families, workplaces, friendships, and communities. When people come together at an event, they are participating in a shared act of care, even if they have never thought of it that way before.
Creating experiences people want to return to
We are thoughtful about the kinds of events we run and how they feel to attend. Our aim is to create experiences that people enjoy, feel comfortable attending, and are happy to support again in the future.
Enjoyment and generosity are not separate from the mission. When people feel welcomed and appreciated, they are more likely to stay connected to the cause over time. That ongoing support is what allows palliative care services to remain strong, responsive, and sustainable.
Community events help build relationships that last well beyond a single evening or activity. They create continuity, not just momentum.
Every contribution has value
Not everyone is in a position to volunteer, donate regularly, or engage deeply with health services. Community events offer another meaningful way to contribute.
By purchasing a ticket or attending an event, people are choosing to support palliative care in a way that fits naturally into their lives. These collective contributions add up. Over time, they fund real services, support real people, and make a measurable difference across the ACT.
Looking ahead, together
Palliative care is about quality of life, comfort, and support through serious illness. It is also about community. Strong, well-supported palliative care services do not exist in isolation. They are sustained by people who choose to show up, participate, and give in ways that feel right for them.
Our community events are one way we invite that participation.
We welcome you to explore what is coming up, find an event that appeals to you, and be part of the shared effort that helps make palliative care possible.
