Yesterday at the Canberra Community Chest Race Day, something beautiful took flight — and it carried with it forty years of care, connection and community.
Palliative Care ACT is proud to introduce our Butterfly Pea Botanical Gin, crafted in partnership with Underground Spirits Australia. This small-batch gin has already captured hearts, sparked conversations, and created a moment of pure joy for everyone who gathered around our tasting table.

A Gin Inspired by Forty Years of Living Well
For four decades, Palliative Care ACT has supported people to live well — in their homes, in hospitals, in the hospice, in residential aged care, and at Leo’s Place, our respite home:

In palliative care, the smallest rituals often hold the greatest meaning.
Every day at 5pm, hospices around the world share a quiet, gentle tradition — the drinks trolley.
A clink of glasses.
A quiet toast.
A reminder that life is for the living.
This gin is inspired by those moments — the ones that lift spirits, spark connection, and offer comfort on even the hardest days.
Transformation in Every Drop
Distilled with blue butterfly pea flower, the gin transforms from deep blue to vibrant violet with the simple squeeze of citrus. It’s visually stunning, but also deeply symbolic.
A life-changing diagnosis shifts a family’s world in an instant.
Yet even in those seasons, there can be transformation, dignity, meaning, and beautiful moments of togetherness.
Our first volunteer newsletter was named “The Butterfly”, chosen for exactly this reason. The butterfly represents change, fragility, resilience, and the grace that lives inside life’s hardest transitions.
Bringing the butterfly to this collaboration feels like a full-circle moment — honouring our beginnings while celebrating the next 40 years of community care.

A Launch Day Full of Joy & Generosity
At the Race Day launch, the gin made its debut to a warm and enthusiastic crowd. The colour-changing magic had people gathered around, watching it shift from blue to purple with delight.
There were conversations about care, loss, hope, family, and the everyday beauty of the work we do. Many people shared their own experiences with hospice care or volunteers who had made a difference in their lives.
And of course — many asked how soon they could order a bottle.
