Palliative Volunteer Courses

  • February 21, 22 & 25

Life Story Writers’ Course

  • March 14 – 9.30am – 4pm

Palliative Volunteer Course

Currently held over three days:  9.30am – 4pm each day

Topics covered include:

  • What is palliative care and the role of a palliative care volunteer
  • Communication
  • Spirituality
  • Illness and care/Death and dying
  • Diversity
  • Grief and loss
  • Self-care of volunteers and professional boundaries
  • Hand and foot massage
  • Mandatory topics including infection control, safe food handling, WH&S, manual handling, incident reporting, fire safety, compulsory reporting of assaults (in residential aged care facilities).

Life Story Writers’ Course

Topics covered include:

  • Background and theory of life stories and palliative care
  • The process: interviewing, recording, transcribing, editing and formatting
  • Tools:  Mind maps and conversation starters.  PC ACT supplies writers with digital voice recorders
  • Homework. This course involves volunteers completing some homework tasks.

Volunteers wishing to become Life Story writers must first complete the initial 3-day volunteer course.

All Palliative Care ACT volunteers require:

  • Working with Vulnerable People Registration – ACT Government
  • National Police Check (for volunteers in residential aged care facilities).
